The University Thing

Following various stories that have appeared in AP, etc about this whole college bribery scandal, I have to wonder why people are as "shocked" as they claim to be.

The story starts out as this: "Fifty people, including Hollywood stars Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin, were charged Tuesday in a scheme in which wealthy parents allegedly bribed college coaches and other insiders to get their children into some of the nation’s most elite schools."

And continues "At least nine athletic coaches and 33 parents, many of them prominent in law, finance or business, were among those charged." And "The coaches worked at such schools as Yale, Stanford, Georgetown, Wake Forest, the University of Texas, the University of Southern California and the University of California, Los Angeles. A former Yale soccer coach pleaded guilty and helped build the case against others."

Basically it seems that the university coaches accepted bribes from rich people to use a backdoor method to allow their elite kids into college.

Is this wrong?  Of course it is.

Is it Shocking? A bit maybe, but Come On.

The schools involved: USC, UCLA, UT, Wake Forest, Georgetown, Stanford, and Yale, are all mostly private schools.  Lets take UCLA out of the equation here.

Are you really surprised to learn that a different set of rules apply to get your kids into a Private Ivy League school such as Yale exists for families that are able throw around " from $200,000 to $6.5 million to guarantee their children’s admission"?

I am not.   Lets consider the bribe a different way, a more theoretical way.  If you can afford to build a school a new wing at Private University's medical building (and put your name on it) would you not also expect them to admit your child at the same time? I am not sure what this sort of thing costs, but its in the range of millions.

These private (and public) universities should be ashamed of themselves.  Perhaps the real issue though is that many of us consider some of these schools such incredible places.  Anyone that went to huge public university can tell you that part of the experience is just graduating on time.  Trust me, no one is out there to look after you and the governmental system is a maze.

Lets All put our shock away and start thinking less of these elite private school and commend public school graduates more!
