About Marin County

About Marin County:
Marin county is just north of San Francisco.  It is connected to this great city by the Golden Gate Bridge.  It is different than San Francisco in that is it filled with open spaces- space to Roam.

Where is Marin?

Marin is located, as we have said, just North of San Francisco city and county.  It is located along the coast, surrounded generally on three sides by water.  This makes it a peninsula.  Bordered by the West by the Pacific Ocean, the East by the Bay, and the South by the Golden Gate.  To the north is land galore, which is Sonoma County.

Notable Considerations in Marin County:

The Cost of Living in Marin County:

As an Insurance broker that writes numerous home insurance policies in Marin County I can tell you that homes are extremely expensive here in this county (and often hard to insure as well.)  If you look at real estate listings most home in this county sell for well over $1,000,000 and many of those are fixer homes with no garages.   This average price often includes condominiums.

Open Space:

It has been said that over 90% of the land in this county is open space in one way or another.  I have never been able to quite come up with that calculation, but it probably is safe to say that over 80% of the land is protected in one way or another.

We have Federal National Parks, State Parks, Federal National Recreation Areas, Open Space Parks, Water District Lands, and MALT.  MALT stands for Marin Agricultural Land Trust.  The exact definition of MALT is confusing - lets just say its protected lands.  There is so much land that is protected its amazing, both good and bad.

Wealth:

Any discussion of this county needs to acknowledge the average income here, which is amongst the highest in the world.  It has changed dramatically in the past thirty or forty years.   This might be expected given the cost to buy a home.

Employment:

The county of Marin itself does not contain enough jobs itself.  Many people commute to San Francisco and or the East by for employment.  Others work from home.  Still more are self employed.  There are a few notable large employers such as Bio Marin and the cities and counties.

Marin County a Great Place to Visit, Hike, and Live:

Marin is a great place to visit if you have never been here.  It has incredible tempatures and awesome vistas.
